WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT
High School Students Get Creative at Inaugural Stockton Arts Day
Syenna Nguyen thought she wanted to study cosmetology after graduating from Cedar Creek High School.
But the inaugural Stockton University Arts Day on Oct. 15 may have changed the junior’s plans.
“I had a lot of fun. I really enjoyed going to the radio station and seeing all the physical media at WLFR. Just being there was just so cool and immersive,” said the Egg Harbor City resident. “I was going to do hair and makeup, but this honestly has changed my mind a little bit. I might look into the communications programs they offer here.”
Communication Studies was one of several academic programs featuring workshops at the event, including Digital Studies, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. About 150 students attended from six high schools, including Cedar Creek, Oakcrest, Absegami, the Burlington County Institute of Technology at Medford, Hammonton and the Chartertech High School for the Performing Arts.
The event was designed to introduce prospective students to Stockton's Arts and Humanities programs through interactive workshops and giving them a chance to see the “beauty of the Galloway campus,” said Ian Marshall, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities. Marshall said the idea evolved from Stockton’s longstanding Experience Dance Day, which was held separately on Oct.16.
New, Dedicated Archaeology Lab Unearths Opportunities
Bobbi Hornbeck wants to put Stockton University’s Archaeology program “on the map in South Jersey.”
A new dedicated lab space and storage room that opened in September will go a long way toward doing just that, said the Assistant Professor of Archaeology.
“Private donors and collection holders are much more likely and willing to collaborate with places like Stockton now when they know they have a safe, secure and respectable place to give or loan those materials to,” Hornbeck said. “I want to encourage people in South Jersey to start to identify Stockton as an archaeological space that can be called upon.”
The new lab includes a sink large enough for flotation and washing, a more than 2-meter-long soil table, a dedicated computer with proper archaeology software for mapping and data analysis, photography and microscope stations, 10 student workstations and a separate room for storing artifact collections.

Cleanup Volunteers, Vendors Needed for Annual Atlantic City Community Day Event
The Fifth Annual Community Day Clean Up and Party in the Park is looking for vendors and volunteers to help beautify Atlantic City’s streets and beaches on Saturday, Oct. 24.
This year’s event will feature cleanup locations throughout the city from the Northeast Inlet to Lower Chelsea. Volunteers will check in at 8:30 a.m. with a 9 a.m. start time for their cleanup site, which will continue until 11:30 a.m. Trash-pickers and bags will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring their own gloves. Each volunteer will receive a food truck meal voucher that can be redeemed at the Party in the Park at O’Donnell Park near Stockton’s Atlantic City campus.
Go online to sign up for the cleanup or to apply to be a vendor. Online registration for the cleanup will end at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, but walk-up registration will be available the day of the event. If you are registering a group, email stephanie.clineman@stockton.edu.

FROM THE SIDELINES
Stockton Defeats Kean 1-0
The women's soccer team won for the sixth time in the last seven games on Oct. 14, as the Ospreys downed Kean University. Makayla Jaffe scored her second goal of the season for the only goal of the evening.
The game started quickly as the Cougars fired a shot that hit the left post just 19 seconds into the fray. The Ospreys got their feet under them and held a 7-4 advantage on shots with two on net but could not find a tally.
That would change just 1:47 into the second half, when Megan Morris found Jaffe at the right side of the box. Her blast to the lower left corner hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead and the eventual game winning marker.
Stockton kept up the pressure, firing 11 shots to five for the visitors with seven on net. The Cougars had one good opportunity in the 80th minute but were turned away and the game ended in the 1-0 victory for the home squad.
Tori Vliet continued her tremendous play with a four-save effort in posting her league-leading seventh shutout of the season. With the victory, Stockton moved into a tie for second place in the NJAC with four games to play.
Stockton will travel to Wayne, New Jersey for their next game on Saturday, Oct. 17. The Ospreys will face William Paterson for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
Stockton Ties Kean 1-1
The men's soccer team scored in the second half to earn a 1-1 tie on the road Oct. 14 at Kean University. Joseph A. Carbone potted a goal for the second straight game.
Kean took an early 1-0 edge in the 18th minute and also hit the crossbar with a shot during the first half. Stockton ramped up the pressure with 11 shot attempts in the second half.
Carbone tied the game 9:10 into the second stanza with his third goal of the season. The Ospreys later had a pair of near misses. Aiden Hoenisch hit the post with a shot in the 60th minute and Cooper Adinolfi bounced a shot off the crossbar with just 42 seconds left in the 1-1 draw.
Stockton goalkeeper Dan Raivitch made two saves.
Stockton will host William Paterson at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Digital Accessibility Tip: Alternative Text for Images
You should always include an alternative (alt) description with any image. Here are some tips to help you create accessible and meaningful alternative descriptions:
- Explain images in the context of surrounding text.
- Be mindful of users with screen readers. Don’t say: “Image of,” “Picture of,” “Banner,” etc. as a screen reader already tells the user it is an image or graphic.
- Some images automatically include alt text. Please remember to confirm that the automatic alt text is correct.
